  • 5-6 pm: CC Reads book club will discuss Transforming a Rape Culture (pages 313-405) in the Atkins-Holman Student Commons, Columbia College. They will take a closer look at sexual violence in our culture. What are its origins? How have American ideas and expectations about gender, power and sexual violence changed over time? Transforming a Rape Culture is a collection of essays from influential voices such as Gloria Steinem, Andrea Dworkin, and Carol Levy. The book looks at sexual violence and ways we can spur a movement of change. The club will meet every Wednesday in February for free snacks and a vibrant dialogue about this book and how these issues impact our culture.
  • 6:45-8:45 pm: movie & discussion – Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic? (2011) [NR] [1:19] will be shown in the Friends Room at the Columbia Public Library (100 W Broadway / intersection of Broadway and Garth). FCMo Note: We saw this film with our kids at Ragtag and it shows insights about the toxins in our environment that you may not be aware of, as well as being an entertaining movie. Highly recommended!
  • 8-10 pm: movie – Birdman (2014) [R] [1:59] will be shown in Wrench Auditorium, Memorial Union South (518 Hitt St) on the University of Missouri campus.

  • 6 am-12 pm: 15th Heart Fair in the Conference Center / Main Entrance, Boone Hospital Center (1600 E Broadway). Appointments are recommended and Walk-ins welcome after 8 am. For best results, you should fast at least 8 hours before your screening. The Heart Fair provides heart health and stroke education, including free health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood glucose and body mass index (BMI). Your blood test results are available immediately and reviewed one-on-one with a clinician.
  • 12:30-1:30 pm: Bach’s Lunch Recital Series in the Historic Senior Hall Recital Hall (100 Waugh St) at Stephens College. Enjoy listening to Stephens performing arts students as they entertain you with a variety of musical theatre, vocal jazz, classical, and choral works.

Free heart-healthy screenings at the ARC from University of Missouri Health Care Specialists: Body mass index measurements, Blood pressure screenings, Cholesterol screenings (prior 8-hour fast required), Nutritional guidance, Peripheral artery disease screenings.   • 9 am-1 pm: (register – online or 573-874-7244) HomeWorks Home Maintenance Training, offered by the City’s Community Development Department, will be held at the Family Impact Center (2nd floor, 105 E Ash St Ste 200). This free informational class for homeowners and other interested individuals covers basic home repairs, preventative home maintenance, how to decide between doing-it-yourself or hiring a contractor, and insulation and energy efficiency.
  • 9:30-11:30 am: Brick Builders (ages 5+) in the Children’s Program Room at the Columbia Public Library (100 W Broadway / intersection of Broadway and Garth). Drop in for kids to play and build with LEGO bricks. Bricks stay at the Library for the next event.
  • 10-11 am: Orscheln Farm & Home – Answer Workshop: How to start a chick flock. This event will be available at both Orscheln locations: 3300 Paris Rd and 3910 S Providence Rd. New feature: Orscheln now has a YouTube channel with videos related to their workshops—check it out here.
  • 10-11 am: (register online) Lowe’s Build & Grow Clinic for kids – build a Monster Jam kit, featuring Max-D (201 Conley Rd N).
  • 1-2 pm: Building Meals for Super Hero Health class at Natural Grocers (400 N Stadium Blvd).
  • 1-3 pm: Spring Thaw Community Gardening Kick-Off at the ARC (Activity and Recreation Center, 1701 W Ash St). The Community Garden Coalition provides information about community gardens near you. Sign up for a plot to grow your own food this summer, and get seeds.
  • 6-8 pm: Art Reception for Everything is a Remix show at the Columbia Art League (207 S Ninth St).
  • 7-9 pm: 6th International Showcase at the Missouri Theatre (203 S Ninth St). A night filled with international experiences, as the stage of Missouri Theatre becomes the dance floor for a variety of cultural performances by various campus organizations.

  • 2-3 pm: Tunes at Two on the Reading Balcony at the Columbia Public Library (100 W Broadway / intersection of Broadway and Garth). Local musicians provide a musical backdrop from the balcony over the front entrance on the first Sunday of every month. This month features fiddler Howard Marshall.
